Sophia Cradle Releases Free Camera Add-in for BREW SDK 2.1 Emulator

Time for debugging can be saved dramatically with support for the emulator

Abstract

KYOTO — October 21, 2005 — Sophia Cradle Incorporated (Headquarter: Kyoto; CEO: Kazunori Sugiyama), an innovative developer of mobile phone software, today announced to release Camulator, a free camera add-in for BREW SDK 2.1 Emulator. Users can download it at Sophia Cradle web site from October 21 to November 30, 2005 if applied for SophiaFramework 3.0 Beta 1 Free Trial and answered the questionnaire.

Note: SophiaFramework and SophiaFramework Free Trial is currently in Japanese only.

Development Using Camulator

Camulator

Full Story

As camera phone users increase, BREW [*1] now supports camera function from Ver. 2.1. However, the emulator [*2] for BREW SDK 2.1 did not support camera functions, which was a problem for developers because they could not use the debugger included [*3] with the emulator.

Sophia Cradle developed Camulator to solve such problem. Camulator is the only add-in in the world that enables camera functions in BREW SDK 2.1 Emulator so that the developer can debug on a handset or a computer.

Using Camulator with SophiaFramework [*4] even helps the developer with memory tracking for camera function. As a result, the developer can save the number of development cycles for programming, testing and debugging.

Sophia Cradle research proves that time for debugging on a handset is reduced from 35 hours without Camulator to 20 hours with it.

To download Camulator, please apply for SophiaFramework Ver. 3.0 Beta 1 Free Trial and answer the questionnaire provided later.

Note: SophiaFramework and SophiaFramework Free Trial is currently in Japanese only.

Terms

[*1] BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless)

The standard of mobile phone software developed by QUALCOMM Incorporated, released in January 2001. BREW applications work fast no matter what the underlying system software in the handset is. A user can download a compiled BREW application from the Internet and use it with any BREW-enabled handset. The worldwide spread of BREW is remarkable, and there are many network operators that provide BREW services, including Japan's KDDI which started offering them in February 2003. Recently, another Japanese network operator NTT DoCoMo has also started BREW services with particular handsets.

[*2] Emulator

Software that enables the system@of a particular device to work on another. For example, a developer can use an emulator to run a mobile phone application in Windows.

[*3] Debugger

Software that helps a programmer debug a program by stopping at certain breakpoints and displaying various programming elements. When a program runs in an unexpected way or stops running, the programmer has to search for bugs in a program. Using a debugger, the programmer can step through source code statements one at a time while the corresponding machine instructions are being executed.

[*4] SophiaFramework

Object-oriented development environment for BREW applications released by Sophia Cradle Incorporated in August 2002. It includes various program modules called classes that are needed to develop any kind of BREW applications, such as user interface, communication, graphic drawing and string processing. The technology of SophiaFramework is now being used in many of the business BREW applications and official KDDI applications that are top-sellers in Japan.
