Sophia Cradle Releases Free Switcher for Different Versions of BREW SDK

Enables developers to use both BREW 2.0 and BREW 2.1 on a computer

Abstract

KYOTO — October 31, 2003 — Sophia Cradle Incorporated (Headquarter: Kyoto; CEO: Kazunori Sugiyama), an innovative developer of mobile phone software, today announced the release of BREW SDK Switcher, a free software that helps developers create BREW applications using BREW 2.0 and 2.1 without changing a computer. BREW SDK Switcher can be downloaded at the Sophia Cradle web site from today till November 11, 2003.

Full Story

QUALCOMM's mobile phone platform BREW, which in Japan was started by KDDI in February 2003, has steadily been spreading around the world. BREW versions are renewed by QUALCOMM continuously, adding features and enhancements. Versions 2.0 and 2.1 are the latest versions currently used in Japan today.

In order to solve problems related to BREW development, Sophia Cradle developed BREW SDK Switcher to be offered for free. Prior to BREW SDK Switcher, a BREW developer had to change computers to use different versions of BREW, otherwise the later-installed BREW SDK would automatically re-write the settings of the pre-installed BREW SDK during installation. On the other hand, with BREW SDK Switcher, a developer can use different versions of BREW on one computer just by clicking a button in the BREW SDK Switcher window. The Switcher fascilitates effective development because it is easier for a developer to use one computer than to use extra computers. Sophia Cradle also expects to provide more tools for BREW in the future so that the BREW development environment as a whole will be improved.

[*1] Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW)

The standard of mobile phone software developed by QUALCOMM Incorporated, released in January 2001. BREW applications work fast no matter what the underlying system software in the handset is. A user can download a compiled BREW application from the Internet and use it with any BREW-enabled handset. The worldwide spread of BREW is so remarkable that there are many network operators that provide BREW services, including Japan's KDDI which started offering it in February 2003.
